CAAD Milestone Victory – Our Collective Power Just Shifted the Global Climate Agenda
For the first time in UNFCCC history, information integrity is set to appear on the provisional COP30 agenda, with Parties expected to review, and potentially adopt, when the conference opens in Brazil this November. This is not just a breakthrough; it’s a landmark moment in the global effort to confront and dismantle climate disinformation. And it is a direct result of your collective work, resolve, and coordination.
Just last week at the UN Bonn Climate Change Conference, the COP30 presidency hosted a session focused solely on “Information Integrity on Climate Change.“ This powerful move signals that Brazil is preparing to place the fight against disinformation front and center at COP30 later this year.
During the session, João Brant, Secretary for Digital Policies at the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic delivered a sobering truth:
“The real problem with disinformation is that it delays our response. It leads us to focus on the wrong issues or to approach the topic with less urgency than it deserves”
Charlotte Scaddan, the UN’s Senior Advisor for Information Integrity reinforced this urgency:
“These climate disinformation agents are trying to undermine climate action. They are also weaponizing the issue to fuel social polarization and destabilize democratic processes, including elections. This directly impacts multiple areas of UN engagement.”
The message is clear: industrial climate disinformation is a systemic threat and tackling it is essential to climate justice and democratic integrity.
Thanks to your efforts, this issue is now commanding the global attention it demands. The launch of the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change, bringing together Brazil, UNESCO, and the UN, is a testament to the growing momentum we have collectively built.
This is your time to celebrate
Together, we have been advocating for such an action and anchoring upholding information integrity to the international climate diplomacy processes and it is happening. Let’s carry this energy forward, because the world needs truth, accountability, and coordinated action more than ever.
