Briefing Note: Bot Activity in Canadian Election

In the lead up to the 2025 Canadian election, a network of botlike accounts posted the same Youtube video on the platform X attacking Liberal candidate Mark Carney, claiming that his firm Brookfield will financially benefit from the Liberal Party’s “net zero agenda”.

CAAD has so far identified at least 60 accounts that are heavily suspected of being bot accounts, with markers like no profile photo, no bio, and no original content in their posting history. These accounts exhibit similar posting behaviour, with most of them exclusively posting Youtube videos from right-wing and conspiratorial channels Rebel News, Northern Perspective and Moose on the Loose.

Up to 600 accounts in total have been found posting the same suspicious content on X, all of which are suspected to be part of a bot network used to influence the Canadian election through climate- and other types of disinformation.
